This project was a choreographic response to Debussy’s Trio Sonate for Flute Viola and Harp. Commissioned by Stephanie Beck to be performed at the first festival of dance of Liechtenstein, the choreography took the influences of Debussy as the context for investigating the movement.
Katsushika Hokusai and Edgar Allan-Poe were the fundamental anchor-points of the choreography that dealt with the form and compositions of Debussy’s score. This was a trio of individuals each scribing their own dances independently of one another in response to the musicians on stage.
The choreography highlighted not just the movement of the music, but also its politics of revolution and defiance through an emphasis on individual independence of the performers and disregard for the importance of ‘entertaining’ the spectator.
